From Waste to Water: Milan Bridge Becomes Living Biome
The Living Bridge transforms Milan’s Perrilino Tower and its adjacent office bridge into a self-sustaining urban ecosystem. Working with Stefano Boeri, we reimagine the bridge as a link between the commercial tower and his new residential building, powered by the exchange of their waste streams.
Wastewater from both towers flows into the bridge, where wetlands and membrane - designed by Natural Systems Utilities - bioreactors naturally filter 30,000 gallons a day. The clean water is reused for irrigation and building systems, reducing strain on the city’s sewers. At the same time, waste heat is captured to support a greenhouse, cultural spaces, and a wellness center within the bridge.
30,000 Gallons of Clean Water / Day
By transforming waste into resources, the Living Bridge functions as both infrastructure and public space—a place where water is purified, energy is recycled, and ecology and urban life are woven together.
