The ‘Seed’ Extreme Environment Research Tower and Nursery

United Arab Emirates

A Vertical Instrument for Extreme Climate Cultivation

The building calibrates light, heat, and humidity through its form and envelope, using a solar-oriented geometry and double-skin façade to passively structure environmental conditions. These gradients are amplified vertically, creating distinct zones that replicate future climatic extremes rather than idealized present-day conditions.

Arid, temperate, urban, and aquatic environments are stacked within a single continuous system, allowing real-time comparison and experimentation. The architecture itself becomes an active research tool, not just a container for it..

Extending Legacy

The project reactivates the original site of controlled environment agriculture, where large-scale hydroponic cultivation first demonstrated that food could be grown in extreme desert conditions. Building on that foundation, Seed establishes a new platform for global collaboration across universities and research institutions focused on climate adaptation.

Its mission is to develop strategies for food, water, and ecosystem resilience in the face of accelerating environmental change. In doing so, it carries forward a legacy of innovation while reframing it for a far more urgent future.
