Catskills Rio Retreat

UNDER CONSTRUCTION - 2024

Off-Grid, Carbon Negative, Up-Cycled Construction

The Rio Retreat is an off-grid, carbon negative cabin built from repurposed shipping containers and locally sourced materials. Its interiors feature wood milled on-site from the failed trees.

The containers, along with most of the glass and steel, were acquired second-hand from small businesses in Port Jervis. A portable mill, transported from less than a mile away, was used for processing the lumber.

This project is in memory of John Lust - friend and craftsman who made this project possible.

Site Harvested Power and Timber

The retreat operates entirely on all-electric, fossil-fuel-free systems. Power is supplied by dual 6kW 48V 120/240 split-phase inverters connected to a 14kW solar array, supported by a 30.6kWh energy storage system.
